Our Origins

Forged in the Storm. Built to Serve.

The Savage Saints did not begin with a building, a polished plan, or an established institution. It was born in the mountains of western North Carolina after Hurricane Helene, where communities were isolated, roads disappeared beneath landslides, and neighbors depended on one another to survive.

What began as ordinary people answering the needs immediately in front of them became something much larger. Through faith, sacrifice, and countless acts of service, the foundations of The Church of the Savage Heart were quietly being laid long before anyone realized a ministry was taking shape.

On September 26, 2024, Hurricane Helene bore down on Little Switzerland, North Carolina. Andrea “Lion” Mathews and William “Rabbit” Barthel prepared inside their mountain home as the storm intensified around them.

By September 27, tornadoes, landslides, flooding, and destructive winds had torn through the Blue Ridge. Roads disappeared beneath debris. Valleys flooded. Communities lost power, communication, and access to the outside world.

That day changed the direction of their lives and planted the earliest roots of what would become The Savage Saints.
